The universe has a new a queen — and her name is Grag Queen.
The Brazilian performer was crowned the winner Wednesday of the debut season of “Queen of the Universe,” Paramount Plus’ international drag queen singing competition series from the creators of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” The finale, in which the audience chose the winner after hearing from judges Michelle Visage, Trixie Mattel, Leona Lewis and Vanessa Williams, saw Grag battle it out with Ada Vox of San Antonio and Atlanta’s Aria B. Cassadine.
Variety caught up with Grag on the phone on Thursday from her home in Brazil.
Congratulations! What was the first thing that went through your head when they announced you won?
I just thought about my [LGBTQ] people because we’ve been through a lot. No one cares about us, so I’m hoping I’m going to be like a door to bring some joy to my people.

Through the years since it began in 2002, “American Idol” has supported their winners and even runners-up. Just this week, Gabby Barrett, who was the second runner-up on Season 16, performed her new country single, “I Hope,” about a cheating boyfriend. Meanwhile, Season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert — who acted as a coach on Queen week since he is the band’s current frontman — will perform on the May 19 finale.
Last year’s winner, Maddie Poppe, showed up with her beau, Season 16 runner-up Caleb Lee Hutchinson, during a Disney-themed week on April 21. They did a brief duet of “A Whole New World” from the animated musical “Aladdin,” which has been redone in live-action form starring Will Smith as the genie and opens May 24. However, there was no promotion of her upcoming album, “Whirlwind,” released on the Disney-owned label Hollywood Records, which will land on May 17.

The season finale of “American Idol,” scheduled for May 19 on ABC, is fast approaching, which means another star-studded performance show to usher in a new winner. Among those already announced to appear is “Idol” season 8 runner-up and Queen frontman Adam Lambert.
For much of its 17-year life as a television phenomenon, “Idol” made efforts to support its previous winner, be it David Cook (season 7) or Fantasia (season 3) with much coveted airtime. So why has the show seemingly broken from tradition this year in practically ignoring its previous victor, Maddie Poppe? “Idol” viewers are wondering and openly questioning on social media.
Although Poppe and her boyfriend, fellow season 16 finalist and runner-up Caleb Lee Hutchinson, did appear on a Disney-themed episode on April 21 to perform an abbreviated duet of Aladdin’s “A Whole New World,” there was no mention of her forthcoming Hollywood Records debut, “Whirlwind,” due on May 17 (the label...

“American Idol” is back in the Emmy race after Season 16 premiered on ABC in 2018 following a two-year hiatus. Prior to that, the series spent 15 seasons at Fox where it racked up an astounding 67 Emmy nominations and eight wins. Nine of those noms were for Best Reality-Competition Program where it was defeated every time. Will the ABC reboot of this iconic reality TV series receive the same love from Emmy voters this time around? Below are four reasons why “American Idol” will have a strong resurgence at the Emmys.

We laughed. We cried. We laughed some more. Thanks, Katy Perry!
The “American Idol” finale may have been a little lackluster in terms of star power, but the judge in the middle seat — when she could endure sitting in it for more than a minute — more than made up for it. Whether it was begging Bachelorette contender Becca Kufrin for her hand — and a chance to compete on the ABC show — or spinning herself silly after the revelation that Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Maddie Poppe are now a couple, or mock fawning over hottie Trevor Holmes, who showed up again in a cute video sendup of Richle’s “Hello” with Ada Vox and Noah Davis, between Perry’s snappy retorts, her physical comedy or her pop culture know-how, there was not a dull moment.

The winner of season 16 of “American Idol” will be revealed at the end of the May 21 results show. The three finalists are Gabby Barrett, Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Maddie Poppe. They will open the two-hour telecast with a performance of “Meant to Be” with Bebe Rexha. This marks a return to “idol” for Rexha. She had been a mentor to the Top 24 and done a duet then with Hutchinson on this song, which was a big hit for her and Florida Georgia Line last year.
Each of the finalists will also get a chance to shine in a duet on Monday’s show with the original artists. Hutchinson is slated to sing “Wagon Wheel” with Darius Rucker. Poppe will perform the Oscar-nominated “Rainbow Connection” with Kermit the Frog. And Barrett will join with “Idol” judge Luke Bryan on “Most People Are Good.”

Because no matter how hard they believed, three contestants saw their American Idol dreams come to an end during Sunday’s special Disney-centric episode. (Seriously, though, why did we ever trust a crazy lady who lived in an attic and sewed clothes for “talking” mice and birds? Reality was never her forté.)

For the first time in American Idol history, the reality singing competition had a Disney-themed night. To mark the occassion, Katy Perry decided to dress as the first Disney princess ever — Snow White. Wearing a black wig, glittery red lipstick, and the iconic yellow, red, and blue costume, Katy transformed into the animated royal, all that was missing was her gang of dwarves. Unless you count fellow judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and host Ryan Seacrest. However, she would still be four squad members short. And she stayed in character through Maddie Poppe's kick-off performance of "Bare Neccessities" calling her "sweetie" and congratulating her on her "bravery" in Snow White's high-pitched voice. Snow White!!!!

After America chose the Top 10 contestants on American Idol, fans of the series called out voters for being racist and homophobic on Twitter. Viewers at home quickly realized that all six of the contestants who were chosen by voters to advance to the Top 10 were white, straight performers — and many of them think it was not a coincidence. Fans were so outraged, that they took to social media to accuse the majority of voters of being prejudice due to the lack of diversity in their picks. Watch the video above to see angry fan tweets! The singers who did get voted through into the Top 10 are Maddie Poppe, Cade Foehner, Gabby Barrett, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Michael J. Woodard, and Catie Turner. That left the eight remaining contestants scrambling to perform for judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan in the hopes that they would earn one of the last four remaining spots.

Monday night’s “American Idol” elimination round lowered the number of contestants left on the show to just 10, but raised the level of emotions to 100.
Mara Justine and Compton resident Marcio Donaldson were sent home, as were country singer Garrett Jacobs and Johnny Brenns, who made his first official stage appearance as a musician on the show. While none of the contestants were happy to leave, it’s safe to say there were no sore losers during this round.
Justine showed her poise and maturity when she said after the show, “I feel good. What a blessing it is to be here – to have made it this far. I never would have imagined something like this in my whole entire life.”
Donaldson echoed the sentiment, “Top 14 out of 300,000. When you think about that, it’s only gonna be one winner at the end of the day, if you take it...

Singer Colbie Caillat might not have felt so "Bubbly" after she auditioned for American Idol. The 32-year-old singer actually tried out for the reality competition twice during its Fox run… but you can be forgiven if you don't remember seeing her on camera. As Colbie reiterated in the ABC revivals April 16 episode, she was axed at the pre-audition stage and didn't even get to sing for the judges! "I was in the auditions that you are outside with thousands of people," Colbie told Today in 2011 (per the Daily News). "You sleep on the street." On her second tryout, she even performed "Bubbly," her Platinum-certified debut single. But she doesn't hold a grudge against Idol, it seems. In an interview with USA Today (per Rolling Stone), she said she understands why she got the boot: "I was shy. I was nervous. I didn't look the greatest. I wasn't ready for it yet.

When Ada Vox sang "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," she meant it. Audiences did not vote through the American Idol contestant, but judge Katy Perry made an executive decision and sent the singer immediately into the Top 10. "I've got a lot to learn, but I have worked my butt off for over 10 years in the spotlight and these gentlemen on my side, all of us collectively together—how many years would that be? Maybe 60? Collectively…as a sum…I think we do know talent when we see it. So I would say we would like to make an executive decision right now. Ada, you get that seat." After the show, Perry told E!...

Nearly one hour into “American Idol,” judge Katy Perry nearly gave up waiting for someone to “start the show.” Then Ada Vox (pictured) stepped up to the microphone. Dramatically standing center stage and channeling her inner Freddie Mercury with power and conviction over a, perhaps, overzealous band, some notes may have sounded strained but the emotion made it work.
“I was waiting for someone to show up,” said Perry.
Added Lionel Richie: “You have no idea how fabulous you are… you came here tonight to stop the show.”
Vox was certainly looking like the one to beat, and her story of surviving brain surgery added another dimension to the impressive performance of Queen’s “The Show Must Go On.” That was, until the second half of Sunday night’s (April 22) show.
