Twisters has been tearing up the box office. “Twisters” director Lee Isaac Chung wanted to capture the spirit and culture of storm trackers, whose profession requires a great deal of time in cars and trucks.
“Everybody I talked to in Oklahoma who chases, music is such an integral part of it,” said Chung when he was a recent guest on IndieWire’s Toolkit podcast. “Anytime I’d ask, ‘What’s on your playlist?’ you’d see them break into a smile, and everybody has a different music choice.”
In the Chung household, there is a rule: Whoever is driving picks the music. On “Twisters,” director Chung drove the proverbial train, and the country music lover got to build his dream soundtrack. For a film that takes part mostly on dirt roads in rural areas of Oklahoma, with characters driving into storms when most sane people are headed in the other direction, an outlaw country music sound also made sense.

Back in 2019, the trio Avenue Beat released their song “Delight.” A frothy, pop-influenced production about a relationship gone sour, it came with the memorably repeated chorus line “I’m a freaking delight.” It wasn’t their single, so country radio mostly ignored it, and Quincy, Illinois, natives Savana Santos, Sam Backoff, and Sami Bearden soon moved on to new music including “I Don’t Really Like Your Boyfriend.”
“That feels like so long ago,” Santos says during a Zoom call with her bandmates in July.

Two years after going viral for yodeling Hank Williams’ “Lovesick Blues” in an Illinois Walmart, Mason Ramsey is now applying his uncanny vocal abilities to a stinky problem threatening to overheat the Earth: cow-based greenhouse-gas emissions.
“When cows fart and burp and splatter/well it ain’t no laughing matter,” Ramsey sings, emerging from the rear-end of a cow, in an inexplicably clean and sparkling white suit. Things get even weirder — and apocalyptic — when the 13-year-old dons a rhinestone-studded gas mask to envision a world uninhabitable by human beings. “Reducing meth-aa-aa-aane,...

If there was ever a man to bring rodeo to the Grammys stage, it had to be Lil Nas X. On Sunday night, the Grammy-winner took the stage for the first time for one of the night's biggest performances, an all-star rendition of his record-breaking hit "Old Town Road." If you weren't itching to rock a Stetson and some boots after watching that performance, you need to see it again!
Not only was Lil Nas X joined by his first remix partner, Billy Ray Cyrus, but his collaborators on the song's later remixes chimed in as well. Everyone from yodeling star Mason Ramsey, Diplo, and K-pop boy band Bts hopped onstage for their versions of the song, and the audience was digging the mashup. The singer walked through a revolving stage with different themed rooms for every remix, before ending with a surprise duet of his new record "Rodeo" with rapper Nas,...

The Grammys are nothing if not a sensory experience, but what you see and hear on stage hardly tells the full picture. Variety had reporters on the ground and backstage keeping tabs on the actions. Read on for what you didn’t see on TV.
• After completing his red carpet duties, Lewis Capaldi headed to the adjoining Jw Marriott Hotel for a rest before the storm. Along the way, he cheeringly posed for photos with fans.
• The red carpet was mobbed but one of the easiest stars to spot was Billie Eilish, whom Sharon Osbourne, working as on-air talent for CBS, embraced excitedly. They both squealed, naturally.
• Meanwhile, at the premiere ceremony, otherwise known as the pre-telecast, Billie Eilish was absent from the stage for her best pop vocal album grammy, but her family and team also didn’t accept on her behalf, choosing to wait and see if brother/collaborator Finneas wins best producer,...

Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X were the twin superheroes of Grammy Night 2020, with her green hair and his pink cowboy hat as signs of electric youth. Billie swept the top prizes. It was so poetic to see her accept the Best New Artist award from Alicia Keys — since Alicia won Best New Artist the year Billie was born. And it was poignant to see Smokey Robinson, America’s greatest living songwriter, embrace Billie with a warm hug when she won Song of the Year for “Bad Guy.” It felt...

Lollapalooza returned to Grant Park in Chicago once again for a weekend of music, and a lot of sun. Along with the usual packed crowds streaming into downtown, this year saw an uptick in surprise guests (hi, Chance the Rapper), and an easily observed increase in spiked seltzer sales. The headliners this year— which included Ariana Grande, Childish Gambino, the Strokes and Tame Impala — were joined by a host of acts that could have taken the leading slots themselves, like Lil Wayne, Janelle Monáe, Kacey Musgraves, Meek Mill, 21 Savage and Death Cab for Cutie.

Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” gets another new remix. For the latest version, Bts’ Rm teams up with Nas for the cleverly named “Seoul Town Road.”
On the new remix, which was unveiled on Wednesday around midnight, they reference South Korea’s capital city Seoul, where Bts formed, and the slightly briefer take on the song features Rm jumping on a verse and hitting a chorus with Nas.
“Old Town Road” has been ruling the charts for months, recently regaining the Number One spot on the Rolling Stone Top 100 Songs Chart.

Blondie have performed many covers throughout the years, including the Doors’ “Break On Through (To the Other Side)”, the Beatles’ “Please Please Me” and their Number One hit “The Tide is High,” originally recorded by the Paragons. However, since kicking off their co-headlining tour with Elvis Costello and the Imposters this week, they’ve added an unexpected one to their setlist: Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road.”
The band gives the mega-hit a punk makeover, with Debbie Harry’s sultry, syrupy vocals dragging out the chorus to create a haunted western vibe.

On the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart dated July 27, Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus finally did it. “Old Town Road” spent its 16th week at number-one, tying the all-time record shared by “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men and “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber. Now the song is heading into uncharted territory. Could it now set a new record by spending 17 weeks on top?
The battle for the top spot this week was a duel of remixes. Billie Eilish tried to give her number-two hit “Bad Guy” a bump by releasing a new version with Justin Bieber, and Lil Nas X followed suit by releasing another “Old Town Road” with Young Thug and Mason Ramsey. “Bad Guy” got the bigger boost from its collaboration, up 39% in streaming and 64% in sales, but it wasn’t quite enough to drive Lil Nas X off the road.

But just when he thought it was safe at the top, on July 8 Billie Eilish dropped a remix to her current number-two hit “Bad Guy,” which could give the song the boost it needs to run Lil Nas X off the “Road.” That remix features a verse by none other than Bieber, who thus could prevent his own record from being matched.

Even before Florida Georgia Line took the stage on Wednesday night for the second show of their new Las Vegas residency — Florida Georgia Line Live From Las Vegas — it was clear this wasn’t going to be a typical country concert. There were blinding lasers beaming through the crowd, music loud enough to make rock stars blush and even a 12-year-old opening act.
But somehow, the whole spectacle worked perfectly. In fact, for the next 75 minutes, the show was less concert and more party, with Fgl’s Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley playing fist-bumping hosts.

It’s that time of year again when YouTube is feeling introspective, taking stock of the top 10 “trending” videos of 2018. While this list doesn’t necessarily compile the most-viewed videos of the year, it is calculated according to “views, shares, comments, likes, and more,” YouTube says.
Kylie Jenner was the queen of YouTube in 2018, according to the platform, as her baby announcement video -- which she unceremoniously dropped on Super Bowl Sunday -- came in at No. 1 on this year’s list. Jenner was followed by two videos from YouTube-native stars: Dude Perfect’s Real Life Trick Shots 2 and a tearful breakup announcement from former vlogger couple Liza Koshy and David Dobrik.
A handful of viral figures and moments are also featured on this year’s list, including 12-year-old Mason Ramsey, and Asap Science’s exploration of whether a beguiling audio clip was saying 'Yanny' or 'Laurel' (No. 5).

Mason Ramsey might have stopped by “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” to sing “White Christmas”, but the adorable youngster spilled some tea about his crush on a certain celebrity as well. Ramsey, 12, a.k.a. the Walmart Yodeller, admitted to DeGeneres that while he’s gotten “a few” marriage proposals from his female fans, he’s only got one girl on...

Mason Ramsey recently returned to The Ellen DeGeneres Show to perform his latest single, a classic country arrangement of the Bing Crosby holiday staple “White Christmas.”
Performing in a sparkling holiday suit, Ramsey added his own idiosyncratic flair to the standard, written by Irving Berlin in the early 1940s. The 12-year-old country singer repeated certain phrases for effect (“may your days””), altered the song’s traditional phrasing and hinted at falsetto towards the end of the magnetic performance.

Carrie Underwood absolutely glowed as she stepped onto the CMAs red carpet Wednesday night. The "Cry Pretty" singer tenderly cradled her baby bump as she posed for photographers and looked like a flower garden come to life in her stunning gown. Carrie is expecting her second child with her husband, NHL player Mike Fisher, who showed up to support her.
While Carrie walked the red carpet with real-life husband Mike, she's hosting the show with her work husband Brad Paisley yet again. This is the 11th consecutive CMAs Carrie has signed on to host, and according to People, the duo aren't sick of each other because they spend time apart. "I feel like that's important for any 'marriage,' work or real," Carrie said. "Gotta spend some time apart."
During the show, the two hosts had fun singing together, joking around with Mason Ramsey, and even spilled some exciting baby news.

Mason Ramsey stops dribbling a basketball to tell me something. “I’m not so good during the summer,” he says, “because that’s when all my superpowers go away.”
It’s the first of at least a dozen instances during the recent hour or so spent with the 11-year-old when I am overcome by what is both the most obvious, the least interesting, and yet perhaps the most true thing one can say about Mason Ramsey: he is a child.
Yes, Mason — who over the past six months has become...

This is the second in a Rolling Stone series exploring the new business models of music’s streaming-dominated era. Here is the first on the gold rush to sign the next rap superstar.
In 2016, an Italian millionaire named Gianluca Vacchi – middle-aged with tanned abs and a wardrobe full of skimpy speedos – posted a video of himself dancing to Ricky Martin’s “La Mordidita” on Instagram. The clip took off, so Vacchi continued to upload more material in this vein, eventually scoring a part in the music video for J Balvin’s insta-classic “Mi Gente.
