Zz Top were never really a ballad band. Think “La Grange,” “Tush,” and “Legs.” But for 1986’s Afterburner they tried their hand at a power ballad with “Rough Boy” — this was the Eighties after all. Earlier this week in Nashville, Keith Urban put his own spin on “Rough Boy” at a special event honoring Zz Top’s Billy Gibbons.
Urban was in attendance for the annual BMI Troubadour dinner, an industry event held each September by the performing-rights org to salute a select artist as its “Troubadour.” Last year’s went to Lucinda Williams,...

Before Tim Montana signed with Bbr Music Group/Music Knox Records to release his major label debut, Long Shots, the longhaired, bearded mountain man from Butte, Montana, would watch quietly as the career path he carved out for himself was repeatedly questioned by Nashville executives and managers.
While Montana was building an audience of music fans as a hard-touring country-rocker, playing shows with Zz Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Hank Williams Jr., he was also cultivating an online following as an unconventional social-media influencer. He may not have had the massive...

“I’m a West Coast junkie from a Texas town,” Billy Gibbons growls in his new song “West Coast Junkie.” The surf-rock jam announces the new solo album from the Zz Top guitarist: Hardware, his third solo project, arrives June 4th.
Along with the song, Gibbons released a video for “West Coast Junkie” that finds him and his trio — including former Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum — on a surreal desert trip in search of Sixties go-go dancers. In fact, Gibbons recorded Hardware in a desert studio, setting up shop in Palm Springs,...

Apocalypse, be damned. Tim Montana rallies his gang for a celebratory night in the field in the new music video for “Bury Me by the Bonfire.” The Montana native, Nashville transplant, and passionate supporter of the U.S. military assembles a team of veterans for the clip, the visual counterpart to Montana’s new single.
“If I go, I’m going cowboy-style/Put me six feet deep, and bury me by the bonfire,” Montana howls, as the fire rages behind him, his band, and the veterans, all members of the Black Rifle Coffee Co.

Since first crossing paths in 2013, Zz Top’s Billy Gibbons and Nashville’s Tim Montana have bonded over blues-rock, beards, and barbecue. They combine all three in the new song “Good ‘Ol BBQ,” their first release under the name the Whisker Brothers.
It’s a feel-good tune, tailor-made for the American summer holidays — especially the Fourth of July. In a video for the track, Gibbons and Montana throw a grilling party for a diverse hot-dogging, hot-rod crowd, with Montana (a brand spokesperson for Traeger Grills) singing on-the-nose lines about how...

Southern rock and country artist Tim Montana has released a new video for his single “American Thread.” The Butte, Montana, native returned to his hometown to film the clip, which underscores the workingman vibe of the song, a mix of Zz Top crunch and Kid Rock-like bravado.
There are scenes of horsemen, construction workers, welders and cooks, all toiling in pursuit of their version of the American dream. The video also features a cameo by extreme-sports star Travis Pastrana, a nod to another famous Butte resident, the daredevil Evel Knievel.
