It's difficult enough to scare audiences when a movie has an original plot and an unknown killer, but horror movie franchises somehow manage to keep moviegoers coming back for more of the same frights. The immortal killers in the Friday the 13th, Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street movies hold a place of prominence in movie history alongside Vulcans, Jedis and British secret agents because of their long-running franchises, while the George A. Romero-style zombies have become ubiquitous. All too often, horror sequels are cheap knock-offs of the original created solely to cash in; however, there are those rare sequels that manage to surpass their predecessors, often by expanding upon the original's mythology or by taking the franchise in another direction.
