    Viola Davis made history when she became the first black actress to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama. Accepting the award for her performance in How to Get Away with Murder, she thanked other women of color, including fellow nominees Taraji P. Henson, Kerry Washington, and Halle Berry: “Thank you for taking us over that line,” Davis said.

    Winning two major awards, the groundbreaking series Transparent did much to bring attention to and celebrate transgender individuals. Jill Solloway, after winning for Best Directing for a Comedy Series, told of the rights still being denied transgendered persons and publicized TransEquality.org. Jeffrey Tambor, as he accepted the Emmy for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series, dedicating his award to the transgender community, saying: “Thank you for your patience, thank you for your courage, thank you for your story, thank you for your inspiration, thank you for letting us be part of this change.”
