Poll: Werner Herzog Quotes - Part 2

Besides Werner Herzog's real-life incidences, which inspired two polls, he has also become famous for his voice and the peculiar way he delivers sentences. His way of talking is strange already in German, when he tries to hide his Bavarian accent, and even more original when he attempts to speak English. Herzog's idiosyncrasies as a man who grew up in the faraway mountains, reading Greek poetry until he came down to meet an alien modern world, give his statements their special spice.

The following quotes are assembled from films, books and interviews. Which is your favorite?

Encounters at the End of the World (2007)

The kinds of landscape I try to find in my films...exist only in our dreams. For me a true landscape is not just a representation of a desert or a forest. It shows an inner state of mind, literally inner landscapes, and it is the human soul that is visible through the landscapes presented in my films.

My ideas are like uninvited guests. They don't knock on the door; they climb in through the windows like burglars who show up in the middle of the night and make a racket in the kitchen as they raid the fridge.

We have to have our dark corners and the unexplained. We will become uninhabitable in a way an apartment will become uninhabitable if you illuminate every single dark corner.

Encounters at the End of the World (2007)

Life in the oceans must be sheer hell. A vast, merciless hell of permanent and immediate danger. So much of a hell that during evolution some species—including man—crawled, fled onto some small continents of solid land, where the Lessons of Darkness continue.

Werner Herzog in Burden of Dreams (1982)

In the face of the obscene, explicit malice of the jungle, which lacks only dinosaurs as punctuation, I feel like a half-finished, poorly expressed sentence in a cheap novel.

Mother Nature doesn't call, doesn't speak to you, although a glacier eventually farts. And don't you listen to the Song of Life.

The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans (2009)

Money has always had certain explicit qualities: it’s stupid and cowardly, slow and unimaginative. The circumstances of funding never just appear; you have to create them yourself, then manipulate them for your own ends.

Johnny Carson in The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962)

Talk shows will kill us, they kill our language. So we have to declare holy war against what we see every single day on television [...] I think there should be real war against commercials, real war against talk shows.

Werner Herzog in Encounters at the End of the World (2007)

[It] feels sad that the South Pole or Mount Everest were not left in peace in their dignity. It may be a futile wish to keep a few white spots on our maps but human adventure in its original sense lost its meaning, became an issue for the Guiness Book of World Records.

McMurdo has climate-controlled housing facilities, its own radio station, a bowling alley, and abominations such as an aerobic studio and yoga classes... it even has an ATM machine.
