A Honest Attempt
22 March 2001
Having recently seen Quills, I'm glad I stepped on this one on TV. I'm unfamiliar with the book itself, but I think the director tried to stay close to the basic plot elements and the atmosphere of the time. While the film obviously has the feel of a 70s French softcore film (see gratuitous female nudity, unnecessary in a number of scenes), you get an interesting depiction of the Marquis' chef d'oeuvre on celluloid (far more interesting than Quills may I add). The introduction could well be avoided, but considering the time it was shot it's understandable.
