Early John Dahl work
12 October 2002
The man behind The Last Seduction, Red Rock West and Joy Ride got his career off to a decent start with this entertaining neo-noir. Dahl's screenplay is intelligent and amusing, and a terrific cast aids the cause. There's a minimum of annoying 80s trappings--mostly the unavoidable excesses of Talia Balsam's wardrobe--and the film remains interesting throughout, though the denouement is somewhat confusing. But then it is noir, after all!
