Aleandro "hires" Luppi to be her fiancee because the impending arrival of her brother from abroad. She is Jewish, he is not. He must absorb the atmosphere so that he can pass inspection. The meetings develop into a very intense relationship and they fall in love. She doesn't know he's very poor and is recuperating from an operation, but all ends well as they realize they can't live without one another.
