The best!
24 July 1999
I too live in Fremantle Western Australia, and on the horizon is the Island of Rottnest - where Under the Lighthouse Dancing was shot three years ago.

We holiday on the island when we can afford to. It is even more beautiful than the film suggests, especially in winter. In fact we have relatives who holiday from England and sometimes, instead of going to France or Spain, come over to Rottnest during the summer and swim in crystal clear water and sunbake on the white sand! Every time we go to Rottnest on holiday, we look for the locations used in the movie We thought UTLD was terrific, great scenery, story and music, but I can see why a lot of people didn't like it: no swearing and not a gun in sight! In fact not a single person was shot at all. And there obviously weren't enough BAD people. UTLD is now one of my favorite movies and we have shown it to many people who have all loved and been moved by it. I disagree with all the other reviewers who didn't like it, but I particularly liked the romance, even though it was tragic. It made the character of Jack Thompson even more charming and unselfish, because he knew his bride's ultimate fate. The script was well written, never boring or trite, but I think it was too simple a concept for many who are brought up on Hollywood blockbusters. The story was more realistic, more true to how GOOD people would act in the same situation. I recommend it to anyone who wants to see a honest-to-goodness movie about uplifting human relationships.
