Review of The Avengers

The Avengers (1998)
I Liked It.
24 February 1999
I honestly cannot understand the kind of hostility directed at this movie. I thought it was quite good and did well capturing the classy, yet off-kilter spirit of the TV show. Ralph Finnes was properly cool as Steed, and while Uma Thurman lacked Diana Rigg's self-confidence as Mrs. Peel, she did well enough. Sean Connery was properly over the top as Sir August. As for the supporting cast, Jim Broadbent was good as Mother, and I liked Patrick Macnee's cameo a lot. The effects and production design were well done, and it was nice to have a script that didn't mainly consist of endless variations of "F--k you."

I liked this movie, and am at a loss to understand why so many others didn't. I guess they just don't get it.

Tea, anyone?
