Review of Sepultura: We Are What We Are

Due to the fact that in the past few years, Heavy Metal music had virtually disappeared from the public eye with MTV cancelling Headbanger's Ball, and the lack of commercial support on local radio stations, most metal bands have turned to releasing their visual material on home video. In Sepultura's case, It's an extremely good move. We Are What We Are highlights 3 music videos off of Sepultura's 1995 gold album Roots: "Roots Bloody Roots", "Ratamahatta", and "Attitude". The first segment, "Roots Bloody Roots", directed by Thomas Mignone, was shot on the streets of Brazil, the band's homeland. The video itself gives an insight to Brasilian artwork and culture, and is brilliantly produced. "Ratamahatta", the second video featured, is directed by Fred Stuhr, famous for his work with bands like Tool and Green Jello. This segment is done entirely in claymation, and gives off almost a voodoo/black magic emphasis, as well as the song itself mentioning quite a few Brasilian folk heroes. Carlinhos Brown contributes vocals to this track as well. The final video on this collection, "Attitude", was conceived by Max Cavalera's late stepson, Dana Wells. This one features the Gracie Ju-Jitsu Family in it, pitted against members of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Directed by Block, the entire film takes place inside a combat ring, and also features House Of Pain alum Danny Boy O'Connor as the referee, as well as Dana Wells himself as one of the competitors. This is probably the best of the three featured. Overall, this is an excellent video to pickup, be you a longtime fan of Sepultura, or someone just getting into their works. Highly recommended, and priced less than a compact disc.
