Resident Evil (2002 Video Game)
10/10
Definitely one of the best games ever made.
28 August 2002
This game is so absorbing and well-crafted I felt like I was reading a book or watching a great movie. The graphics are astounding, as good as the Final Fantasy film, and the voice acting is very good. The cut scenes are awesome; the game makers really did a good job with pacing and editing. The script and dialogue are good as well, and the various 'documents' and 'journals' you pick up along the way actually add to the story line. It's as gripping as any really good sci-fi/horror film.

However, my favorite thing about the game is the intangible feeling of dread that permeates the whole thing. My heart raced and I felt intense feelings of fear for sustained periods of time while playing this game! That's weird to me. Oh sure, I'll get so into a game that when I crash or fall off a ledge I'll spasm involuntarily and emit a shriek, but never have I felt like this. Almost every night I played this game I had nightmares about being a soldier trying to fight zombies. I don't know if that sounds like 'fun' to you, but if it does then make sure you play the game with all the lights off, late at night.

I feel sad now that it's over. I feel like I made some real friends in that horrible mansion, down in the trenches wondering "What's around that corner? Will I see my pal Barry, will I pick up a green herb and be healed, will I get jumped on by an evil doggie, or will I get a face full of zombie teeth?" That's just what I said.

In closing, I want to live in the dirty zombie-filled laboratory and I want to make a small fort out of upturned wheelchairs, and I want to skitter and crawl through the ventilation ducts and fight zombies and monsters and save my friends and shoot giant spiders with a grenade launcher.

*sigh*
