Runaway Jury (2003)
An Excellent Thriller, With an Outstanding Cast and a Surprising End
15 November 2004
In New Orleans, the widow of a broker, killed with ten colleagues in their office by a disturbed ex-employee, who committed suicide after the massacre, decides to hire the honest civil lawyer Wendell Rohr (Dustin Hoffman) and bring a civil suit against the gun manufacturer. Further to the defense lawyer, the gun lobby hires Rankin Fitch (Gene Hackman), an expensive and successful jury expert, who selects the jury, using his huge team and state-of-art equipment for collecting hidden information about the jury members and control and manipulate them through blackmail. However, Nicholas Easter (John Cusack) and Marlee (Rachel Weisz) appear as a third part also interested in manipulating the trial result. The story has a surprising conclusion. 'Runaway Jury' is an excellent thriller, and the major attraction is the cast: Gene Hackman, John Cusack, Dustin Hoffman and Rachel Weisz together would probably be enough for a synonym of a great film. But the story, although having some flaws and lots of exaggeration, is also good, specially for viewers like me, who like movies about tribunal. Michael Moore would probably love this movie. The lack of respect of Fox do Brasil with the Brazilian consumers deserves to be recorded. Fox do Brasil releases very expensive DVDs for the rentals only and without any extra, only the scene selection and settings in the menu. If the movie becomes a success, about nine months later they release a DVD for sell-through, less expensive and full of extras. My vote is nine.
