100 % operetta
16 October 2005
A lovely and lively adaptation of this wonderful operetta (sometimes better known as "Silva"), the film retains most of the well-known melodies. The stars are at their very best, and Marika Rökk probably never looked so good before (or after). She was always on the plump side, but in this film she sometimes looks almost fragile. Years have been good on her, and on Johannes Heesters, who is already pushing 50 in this film. Probably the best production of this operetta is definitely worth a look. Rich colour photography, lavish costumes and witty location shots make this film a fast-moving feast for eyes and ears. The film was first released on DVD in Russia (these films went to distribution straight to the Soviet Union, so Russians obviously consider them rightfully their own), and is now available also in a German release.
