CHAOS movie misunderstood
16 November 2005
After reading many reviews of Chaos that scathingly stated that this movie was offensive trash, I decided I had to see for myself. Many have written about how it is an obvious rip-off of Last House on the Left. First off, yes, it is obvious that it is 'based on' the Last House storyline...a new version, if you will. Last House was a history making, ground breaking exploration of the ugliest parts of humanity, forcing the viewer to witness the brutal abduction, rape and senseless murders of two young girls. Yes, it's disturbing. Yes, it's hard to watch at times. Why does everything have to be so comfortable? Art can be uncomfortable as well. I tend to think it's harder to make someone feel genuinely uncomfortable than it is to make them feel comfortable. Shock value is shock value but it doesn't always have to be frowned upon and the actual piece of art is dismissed as bad because of it. It has the word value in it's phrase for a reason. So, I went to see Chaos feeling a little worried that it would make me feel uncomfortable...too uncomfortable yet also worried that it might not make me feel uncomfortable. The friend that I went with hardly watched the screen and instead opted to turn and look at me in fear and confusion during the most brutal parts. I really can't believe that this would have made her feel any better since the audio was really the most disturbing attack on the senses. Yes, the first drop of bloodlet is a gruesome one but it was really Angelica's horrible screaming and pathetic pleas for mercy that got to me... Chaos is a disturbing and graphically brutal modern day version of Last House with not so great acting and silly dialogue but it also is a fun, bumpy ride into ghastliness. What happens to these two young girls and the way we're forced to witness it is nauseating and upsetting but I give credit to someone who can evoke such a strong emotion from people in a world of done it all, seen it alls and unoriginality. Cheers David DeFalco! Please do it to me again....
