Review of Eegah

Eegah (1962)
1/10
One of the best comedies in the world! Pity it's meant to be a horror...

Warning: Spoilers
I came across this movie, already started, on TV while channel-hopping. As a self-confessed bad movie lover, I simply had to watch it. I discovered it during the scene where Arch Hall Jr. and Marilyn Manning were in the desert, trying to go to sleep. She keeps telling him not to let the fire go out, he says he'll stay awake and tend the fire; the fire will keep coyotes away. Then we cut to a wide shot.

Where's this damn fire?! No fire. At all. Not even a smouldering twig. 'Aha!' I thought, 'ultra bad movie alert' and went to get supplies of food and drink to sustain me through the movie. Then Arch Hall Jr started to sing (or rather, mime.Badly.) and I discovered a new phenomenon: 'Craptastic Musical Comedies'. Where did he get the backing track from anyway? He was 'playing' his guitar but that wasn't the only instrument - what, did he find a wandering troupe of musicians trekking across the scrub?

Speaking of finding things in the desert; at one point, after showing off his ludicrously fake beard that makes him look like a reject from the stoning scene in 'Life of Brian', Eegah goes off into the desert and comes back with a fresh bunch of daffodils. Yes, daffodils. In the middle of the desert. Fresh daffodils. A whole bunch.

I won't delve into the latter half of the movie, which simply became painful rather than funny, especially when Archie Hall started 'singing' again with a completely different voice.

Best line: 'Are they dead?' (referring to the mummified corpses of Eegah's family)

I've seen movies that were entertaining because they were so bad before, but never have I seen one this pants-wettingly hilarious. The worst thing is, they seem to be serious... And why, to go with his over long, scruffy nylon beard, does Eegah the giant caveman have a blatantly 60's haircut?
