An Open Door (II) (2006)
10/10
A truly beautiful and powerful film
11 September 2006
'An Open Door' by Crystal Us is the best film I've seen on the film festival circuit. I saw it at Idaho Panhandle International Film Festival, where it won 'Best Drama,' an award that was aptly named and richly deserved.

The acting is stellar - so much better than you'll typically find in an independent film. (As evidence, the lead male actor, Charlie Capen, was nominated for 'Best Male Performance.') This director has a remarkable gift for character development and an equal love for her actors and her story; as a result, the characters are remarkably well-developed for a short. The camera is at times voyeuristic, at other times introspective, and at all times intimate. This film wasn't made; it was crafted. I can't remember when I last saw this kind of passion in a film! Yes, it's that good.

Crystal Us has a gift, and I eagerly await her future work. If you get a chance to see 'An Open Door' on the festival circuit, or anywhere else, don't pass up the opportunity.
