Review of Los isleros

Los isleros (1951)
10/10
The hard life of the "islanders" in Parana River, Argentina.

This is a terrific movie, you don't want to miss. I am usually harsh on Argentinian movies, because I usually think Argentinians can do better. Well, this is one of those that did. The History deals on the life of a married couple living in the little islands placed on the Parana river. Their surroundings (town folk mostly) and about their only son. The plot begins when their son brings his girlfriend to the house, because the mother (played by Merello) is a very mean person with a strong personality hardened by the life they have. I was delighted by all performances here, they are just perfect and submerge you into the film, a complete catharsis. If you like little town and solitude as backbone of story telling you will love it. I don't want to tell more for not spoiling it, but Merello's development to the end (she is called "Carancha", A typical bird of the region that behaves like a small vulture) is surprising. I give a ten to it.
