A good look at real life
13 September 2006
I have a hard time understanding the people who doubt the authenticity of this movie, the best part of it is the simple reality of the characters. If it were staged it would at least have a stronger ending, which is the weakest part.

As to the effect on the women, there's enough to feel guilty about without worrying you're exploiting folks for letting them tell their story. These women are basically asking for two things: people to think of them as human beings, and someone with at least some tiny amount of power who will care if they are killed tomorrow. The movie has already accomplished both. The minor success of this movie means that it gets played in upscale malls here in Guatemala, in a very stratified society like this one I'm sure that it has made a real difference in making thinking of prostitutes as human beings at least trendy.

(I ran into the coach in a bar last week, he/she is real and a nice person.)
