Dos Ilusiones is a wicked and witty comedy from Argentina about aspiring actor Heniberto (Matias Santoianni), a video store geek who moves to the big city after he wins a 'contest' for a screen test. Once in town he meets blonde bombshell actress and co-winner Cynthia Berlin (Claudia Albertario), but when the two learn that their audition is actually for a less than legal snuff film, their dreams of stardom seem set to crumble. Happily for the viewer, the pair--clueless hunk Heniberto, thoughtless airhead Cynthia--engage in a series of Fellini-esquire adventures that see the former adopted as a toy boy by a gay television mogul (Gerardo Romano)and the latter cast as the lead in a soap opera produced by a man who almost raped her (Carlos Portaluppi). This all sounds like some pretty heavy stuff, but writer/director Martin Lobo pulls it all off without insulting the intelligence of the audience or pandering to the least common denominator (though some of the gay humour, though admittedly quite funny, skirts close to the edge). Overall, Dos Ilusiones is a refreshing, enjoyable, and quite surprising comedy.
