Eureka Seven (2005–2006)
10/10
A True Landmark Series
26 July 2007
I've watched many, many anime series and I've realized that I've grown quite picky over what I watch. Sometimes I watch an anime and find myself asking, "Why do I even bother watching this?" Then on a fateful day, I ran out of things to watch so I decided to pick out a new series to devote some time to. I chose... Eureka Seven. I never regretted that decision, and I never will.

Now, at first I didn't really know exactly why I chose Eureka Seven. First of all, I'm not a big romance fan. I'm only semi-interested in dramas. I'm pretty neutral about mech-themed anime. And lastly, most of the 'shounen' anime I've watched weren't very memorable (and some way too overrated). Still, I downloaded the first five episodes and began watching the series.

The first two or three episodes don't explain the story right away. However, there was just enough action, humor, etc. to grab some of my attention. The male protagonist, Renton, is a typical teen, complaining about his life. At the same time, the introduction of the female lead, the titular character, Eureka, added another dimension right away. For me, who does research before watching an anime, once I saw Eureka, I knew the series was going to be good. Eureka, a quite, distant, indifferent, yet charming and beautiful... and Renton, a loud, whiny, yet romantic guy are supposed to be compatible? This I had to see.

Then again, I had to go through the first twenty or so episodes before there was really romance. Before that, it was mostly action, random humor, and most importantly (I'm going to stress this), character development. The whole point of this anime is not the romance. Not the fancy mechs, the elaborate fight scenes, or the comedic aspects. The characters, who they are, how they start out, and how they end up, are the focal points of the anime.

Character development does not stop at episodes twenty-ish, though. It goes on all the way to the final episodes, at a whopping fifty. But don't misunderstand, by the time I passed the halfway point, I was one hundred percent hooked. The only thing on my mind during the week I was watching this anime was not sleep, not food, not friends, not family, but amazingly, Eureka Seven. After each episode, I could not stop for a bathroom break... I had to continue. It was that good.

Each character, especially Renton and Eureka, slowly become genuine, as in fit for reality. Eventually, I felt like I really know these characters. Power of the anime? I really believe so. As I said before, I never was a romance fan. But I made an exception for this anime. Throughout the series, I could not help but smile at the bond between Renton and Eureka. At times, I really even wanted to shed tears. I admit it. Yes. I wanted to break down and cry. And this happened throughout the series at more than one, two, or three occasions.

Characters. Plot. Animation. Music. And more. All of these aspects form this masterpiece. If there was a greater ranking than "masterpiece," then by all means, rank Eureka Seven even higher. Calling this anime wonderful is an understatement. Calling this anime genius is an understatement. Right now, the only word I can think of is "masterpiece." After watching this series for the third full time (Yes, third time, as in three times), I wanted to watch the entire series, from episode one through fifty... yet again. Truly amazing. It is unfortunate that only a percentage of people know about this anime. Hopefully in the near future, there will be more acclaim globally.

As of now, Eureka Seven is my most favorite anime. No, my most favorite anything-that-I-have-ever-watched.

I have four words: Please Watch This Anime.
