Heroes: Chapter Nine: Cautionary Tales (2007)
Season 2, Episode 9
8/10
Love and Death in the Age of Shanti Shanti Shanti
27 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Fantastic episode, especially the third time around. Love consistently makes, breaks and threatens the main characters--Takezo vs. Hiro via Yaeko, classic mix-up between a wayward knight and his noble squire, on par with the French Arthurian romances; Claire vs. Noah via West with some reverse "Electra complex" underpinnings; Niki, compelled to passionate revenge by the "ghost" of D. L. and the primal instinct to protect her cub with Fury Like Hell Hath No; Matt vs. Maury via Molly in a nightmare, again the child protection bit, with a whiff of the dichotomous "father abandonment" motif; Peter vs. Oblivion via Angela, stern but soothing with a tender eye and birthday cake("...Mom."). Adam Monroe vs. the World, a personal war on account of betrayal and a broken heart. As far as expounding on the changeable workings of love, this episode told more tales than Odysseus. Yet, better than the master of many guises, it knew when and how to end--the story arched around to the cliff-hanger wrap-up nicely.

Some odd, if macabre, questions are raised: (From an earlier episode) Could Claire regrow an entire leg? organs? lower torso and legs? ...her head? Does Caitlin die (simply cease to exist) when Peter returns to Montreal? How did Adam Monroe survive the explosion? How much living tissue--how much intact DNA--does one who can regenerate actually need to survive and completely heal? Is Claire in fact descended from Takezo, thus inheriting her regenerative capabilities? Are any of these answered in the 11/26 show? Will any be answered in the 12/3 episode? I can't wait!
