Blackfly (1991)
7/10
Charming and simple

Wow, did the Canadians have a lot of nominees for the Best Animated Short Film Oscar over the last few decades. It seems they have long appreciated and encouraged short film and not surprisingly two of the three films nominated in this category in 1992 were from the Canadian National Film Board. I have loved some of the past nominees from them--especially THE BIG SNIT. However, I gotta admit that 1992 was not a great year for nominees as none of them really seemed memorable or that innovative. Still, the Canadians were well represented.

BLACKFLY is a simple idea and at first, I wasn't all that impressed. However, over the course of the film, I found myself humming along and laughing at the torturous blackflies as they made our hero miserable. Many people who have never been up north have never experienced the yearly summer plague of blackflies--they are indeed hellacious!! Having experienced them when I was a kid, I could sure laugh along with the film and enjoyed it. Nice but not great enough to seem like an Oscar nominee.
