AS Christy settles into the cove, and the children accept her as teacher, she faces the reality that education is not valued by many of the families. Rob Allen's father is one of those who casts a hard opinion towards Rob wanting to write more than work the family mill. Christy encourages Rob in his stories by prompting him to enter a writing contest. Rob does so to the point of ignoring his little brother Burl, who gets lost in the woods. The feuding between families ceases as everyone searches for Little Burl. There is more to the story's title than finding the lost Allen boy. The characters are so gratifying real, and the layering of the plot so rich, there is a sadness that the series ended so abruptly.
