Colomba (2005 TV Movie)
7/10
Flawless new rendition of a familiar theme
2 January 2009
This is yet another movie version of the classic novel "Colomba" (1841) by Prosper Merimee of "Carmen" fame. The first one goes back to the days of silent movies. Lieutenant Orso (Gregory Fitoussi) returns after 7 years in the army to his native Corsica. 2 years ago, his father was murdered, and his sister Colomba (Olivia Bonamy) still wears black. Although Orso is hesitant at the beginning because the murderers' guilt is not proved, Colomba teaches him to hate the enemies of the family and pushes him towards revenge. The new rendition of the vendetta story fortunately resists the temptation to modernize it too much; this is traditional good quality craftsmanship for people who like movies of the 1960s - or a good book. Olivia Bonamy is convincing as the young woman possessed with the idea of revenge, and Gregory Fitoussi plays the man who wants peace but can't find it equally well.
