Warning: Spoilers
I have to say, that I'm quite perterbed with how anti-climactic Derek's death was, but I have a theory why they did it the way they did.

When you think about it, Derek is a hardened "warrior" in the future war. He's one of the best soldiers there is, and there's a good reason he's survived as long as he has. The writers do things like this, to remind us that humans are frail beings in the war between man and machine, and no amount of training makes them invulnerable and prepared for every contingency.

When you analyze the scene, the machine came around the corner with gun raised, whereas Derek came around the corner with gun in the ready position, aimed down. The machine had split-second reaction time, whereas humans...well...we make mistakes... All that being said, the outcome was "realistic" if not appealing...
