Some people consider this a masterpiece and the acting surely is on that level. This is about the dysfunctional Japanese family, who gather once a year to remember a family member's death. By small means, big and and not so big conflicts come to surface.

But there is a problem here. Although the acting is according to today, with moves, gestures and talking being documentary, but with all the drama intact, you still find it difficult to understand all of this. You don't have the codes to Japanese values, which limits your viewer position.

You simply miss much of the drama from not being Japanese.
