Did you know when the 6R4 metro was shown driven competitively it was driven by the late Tony Pond. When the Audi Quatro was seen it was driven by Devon boy David Kynaston (still rallying today) Tony Pond was a works rally driver for British Leyland (Rover) he famously crashed into a tree on the first stage of the RAC rally in 1984 in a Rover 3.5 SDI. David Kynaston broke his neck when he had a big off in Wales in his first Audi A3 in 2003.For at least six months after the accident David had to wear a frame bolted to his head with four supports down to brackets that rested on his shoulders. He made a come back with a new car in 2006. He took the national tarmac rally championship in this year and in 2008. Not bad for a privateer who designed and built his own car.The car is based on a face lift A3 and is 4x4 powered by a 405hp normally aspirated v6.The old A3 that David had the big off in is still sat outside his work shop in Marsh Barton, just the shell that is, all the good bits went into the new car. This mans dedication should be encouragement to any one who would like to excel in this form of motor sport. Its no good sitting around waiting for things to happen you have to make them happen. For example get on the phone and chase some sponsorship it doesn't matter how little the amount take it on board every little helps.
