The Hillz (2004 Video)

A film for obnoxious hipsters
3 November 2009
This film handicaps itself in the very first scene. A group of very, very obnoxious and heartless rich kids enter a liquor store and start berating the guy who works there by throwing out racial slurs, stealing and acting threatening towards him. So, you now hate the leading character and his friends--good job, folks!! I can't speak for everyone, but usually hating the characters is BAD because you turn off your viewers and destroy any connection they might make with them. There are, of course, a few exceptions. If you did a film about Hitler or a serial killer, you certainly wouldn't normally want to set off creating empathy for them--otherwise, it sure makes it tough to stick with the film. And, if that isn't enough, the producer decided to cast Paris Hilton in a major role...'nuff said! Talk about alienating everyone but self-involved hipsters! Sadly, while I thought this was just a bad opening scene, it turned out that this WAS the film. Seeing the lives of a bunch of obnoxious privileged punks isn't my idea of fun--nor is it anyone's unless they, too, are basically shallow and stupid jerks. And, if this film represents the average American teen, then boy is our country screwed!! Crude, ugly and worthless. Don't waste your time. Even staring at vomit is more interesting and worthwhile than this nasty film--the acting is terrible, the script awful and the film is an artless and crude mess.
