Review of Smuggler

Smuggler (1981)
Solid adventure series for boys.

This UK production is a bit dated in terms of presentation. Shot on 16mm the image is a bit grainy, but the other production values are solid. Some solid acting for what this series is; an adventure series.

You won't see this kind of thing produced anymore. Set during the Napoleonic wars in England, we watch a former British naval officer turned rogue fight and carry on the only way he knows how. Using guile, strength and daring he thwarts smugglers, thieves and other dishonorable type from schemes and machinations that would endanger his friends, his love, and of course, England.

Jack Vincent sails the coasts of England and the English Channel in his lanteen rig boat, presumably conveying illicit goods, but more often than not putting his smuggler's wits to good use. Sword fights, some musketry, and a good historical setting, this series should entertain young boys and girls, but may feel some dated.

All I can say is I've enjoyed what I've seen. It's not great drama, but a good diversion to watch with the family.

Enjoy.
