Intriguing material to say the least...
30 December 2009
I'm often amazed at the speed in which criticisms can turn venomous and personal when people feel that their long-held assumptions might be challenged. Reading many of these remarks illustrates Stein's points every bit as well as the documentary does. I'm an engineer and scientist and have witnessed first-hand the mindless persecution and systematic repression of ideas Expelled is trying to bring to light. I've met people fired from NASA, ridiculed and marginalized from MIT (my alma mater) and from Texas A&M (where I once worked). To say it isn't happening is ridiculous. So say Stein is some kind of fanatic Christian (he's Jewish, by the way) and that these credible men and women of science are raving lunatics is a childish means of dismissing the entire serious question. I applaud Stein for standing up for people who are being persecuted for trying to find truth. Academic science in America has seemingly divorced itself from true scientific pursuit and exchanged it for profitable pursuit with a heavy dose of political correctness. It's a shame and certainly not rubbish, as this documentary clearly illustrates. While "Expelled" won't win any Academy Awards, I find it thought provoking and candid. I also appreciate the effort to not these workplace travesties go unsung. These people (and many more) deserve better than this.
