The second episode of 'Affairs of the Heart' to be broadcast is a version of the Henry James story, 'Glasses', about the beautiful and sought after Flora Saunt (Gayle Hunnicutt) and what happens when she agrees to pose for a society painter, James Mallory (the late Anton Rodgers, who seems to have cornered the market in painters, also playing one in Upstairs, Downstairs around the same time).
Flora has a secret only known to her friend, a widow who wears surgical spectacles and ventures out very rarely into company (beautifully played by the incomparable Patricia Routledge). Aside from her secret she has two admirers, both played by actors I don't recall seeing but who have both had long careers (John Quentin as the tiger hunting Lord Iffield and Roger Brierley as the stuttering Geoffrey Dawling).
This episode is greatly enhanced by the performance of Hunnicutt as 'Flora' and her interplay with Rodgers as the painter. Like others in the series it is very studio bound, but really it doesn't need to be much more. The ending is not unexpected, but presented very well. I liked this episode very much.
