***SPOILERS*** Obviously ahead of its time "Collage Confidential" explores the misconceptions and fears of exploring one's deepest and most guarded feelings into being a pervert and sexual degenerate.
It was Griffith County's Collins Collage psychology professor Steve Macinter's, Steve Allen, misfortune that one of his students who was part of his in depth study, on how human relationships have been effected in the atomic age, the sexy Sally Blake, Mamie Van Doren, was caught by her outraged parents Mr & Mrs Blake, Elish Cook Jr & Pamala Mason, coming home late, at 2:45AM, one evening after she was out partying with her boyfriend Marvin, Conway Twitty. Trying to keep Marvin out of the picture Sally implicates Prof. Macinter as being the person who kept her out late at night.
It was after that incident that strange things started happening to Prof. Macinter and his study with nasty rumor being spread all around town and campus that he was in fact having relationships with his female students as part of his in depth study! With newspaper woman Betty Duquense, Joyce Meadow, sent to Griffith County to check out things for her newspaper she finds Macinter quite a nice guy who's only interest in his students that he's studying in what their future will be in the very dangerous world that their to live in.
As things turn out someone in town is using Prof. Macinter's mostly harmless study on human relationships to enhance himself and his family members by getting nation wide publicity off it. Using all kinds of dirty tricks this self serving creep does everything to destroy Prof. Macinter study as well as himself to farther his own greedy and selfish gains. With Macinter put on trial with world wide coverage to boot, in what's considered to be another Scopes Monkey trial, he's in fact found innocent by the town magistrate Sam Grover, Micky Shaghnessy, on all counts. Innocent but with his career all but destroyed as an educator Macinter just about gives up on the law until the truth comes out to who set him up and why! That's when the box boy at the local hardware store ends up slipping off his ladder, while stacking the shelves, and thus exposing the person behind the plot to destroy him!
Don't be fooled by the many negative reviews on the ground breaking and, for a better name, underground film "Collage Confidential". It doesn't exploit sex at all but those blue noses who use it in destroying men like Steve Macinter who, unlike themselves, aren't afraid to be honest about it. In what has to be one of the most thought-provoking speeches ever put into a motion picture Macinter lays it all out to the lynch mob that he's facing in court how their ignorance and prejudice towards the subject will only make things worst not better for them and their children in the very near future! As history has since proved the future of loveless and unrestricted sex working its way into US films and TV as well as in the education systems, down to grade school, of the country has flourished to epidemic proportions since "Collage Conidenial" was released back in 1960. Not because of people like Prof. Macinter who wanted to bring it out of the closet and be seriously studied. But by the ignorant fools who did everything they could to destroy him who in fact were far more obsessed with it, behind closed doors, then he ever was!
P.S The movie also has in it one of the few appearances of the former undefeated Heavyweight Champion of the World, with a record f 49 wins and no defeats, Rocky, the original not movie Rocky, Marciano as the town's deputy sheriff.
