Fashion (2008)
5/10
Frighteningly realistic

This is Madhur Bhandarkar's latest expose on the world of glamour and fashion. The world we all know as glittery and good from the outside is murky and evil from the inside. Bhandarkar shows extensively the politics, the gossips, the haute couture, stealing designs, gay designers, wardrobe malfunctions, drug addictions, backstage dramas etc in this movie.

'Fashion' is a moving tale about two girls who enter the fashion industry and become supermodels, Meghna Mathur (Priyanka Chopra) and Shonali Gujral (Kangana Ranaut). Meghna is a small-town girl who comes to Mumbai to become a top model and soon starts to climb the ladders through compromises. She befriends a struggling model, Janet (Mughda Godse) who shows her the way up the ladder. She also falls in love with another struggling male model, Manaav (Arjan Bajwa). Gradually, we see the rise of Meghna into supermodeldom and her growing arrogance. She forgets all her well-wishers, starts a relationship with her boss, Abhijit Sarin (Arbaaz Khan),the employer of the biggest modeling agency called 'Panache', gets pregnant and aborts her baby due to a clause set by Sarin himself. Then she goes the downward spiral: she starts showing up late for work, abusing drugs, attends rave parties and even sleeps with a Black guy. Luckily, this startles our heroine and she wakes up at her conscience. Meghna goes back to her hometown, is comforted by her parents and after a hiatus of a year, decides to make a comeback.

Parallel to Meghna is Shonali. Her life resembles that of the real-life model, Geetanjali Nagpal who was found begging on the streets. Also, the much hyped 'wardrobe malfunction' scene heavily inspired by the real episode of model Carol Gracias is filmed on Shonali. The only difference between her and Meghna is that Shonali succumbs to her failure and goes deep into self-destruction, while Meghna picks herself up at the nick of time.

Performance-wise, Kangana Ranaut appealed me more than Priyanka Chopra. She looked every inch the character she was playing. She has the supermodel appeal and looks awesome on the ramp. Same cannot be said for her co-star who looks chubby and doesn't even look like a supermodel. Newcomer Mughda Godse dazzles the screen with her great acting talent. No one can say that it's her first film. The rest of the supporting casts are adequate. Arjan Bajwa looks awesome. Arbaaz Khan and Kitu Gidwani are competitive.

Salim-Sulaiman's music is soothing to the soul. 'Jalwa' and 'Mar Jawan' being the best tracks in the movie. Mahesh Limaye's cinematography is breath-taking. The only minus point is the editing department. The movie drags endlessly at the second half. Half of the scenes can be easily edited out.

Despite a few flaws, 'Fashion' is a good entertainer. A must watch!
