Cutting to the Chase
17 July 2010
I'm very fond of Andy Clyde's Columbia shorts. Somehow, he managed to combine his slow reactions -- not stupid, but just taking a little time to react fully to the situation -- with the Columbia Shorts high-speed gag rate with plenty of coconuts in the sound effects, and produce something that was funny -- Mr. Clyde's world almost made sense and his rustic "heh-heh" always let you know he saw the joke.

Here, competing against Jame Morton for the title of County Doctor -- the prize a substantial $2500 a year income -- he and Morton must prove their utility: whoever sees more patients in a week gets the job and they both want it.

There are a couple of set-pieces in this short, one in which everyone in the town gets into a fight and the other the inevitable chase at the end, which Clyde and director Del Lord handle very nicely This is another god Clyde piece and well worth your time.
