Review of Guzaarish

Guzaarish (2010)
6/10
A Decent Flick...
6 January 2011
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's sense of Cinema has never really attracted me. 'Khamoshi - The Musical' was the only film I truly adored of his. 'Devdas', 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' and 'Black' had strong performances, while 'Saawariya' was an absolute letdown. However, his latest outing, 'Guzaarish' is a decent flick.

First and foremost I'd like to inform you is that:- 'Guzaarish' is heavily inspired by two films:- 'Mar Adrento' aka 'The Sea Inside' and 'Whose life Is It Anyway'. So in terms of novelty, Bhansali has less to credit himself. But what he manages to pull off with complete sincerity, is a superb first hour and wonderful performances by it's lead cast.

'Guzaarish' tells the story of a magician, who in a fatal accident turns quadriplegic, who is confined in his own wheelchair. After living 14-long years as a quadriplegic, he appeals for Mercy Killing, so that he gets the right to give his final salute, with dignity and respect.

Despite Bhansali's Screenplay being inspirational, the award-winning filmmaker manages to deliver a superb first hour. But, his writing falters in the latter hour. Even the climax, comes out depressing. As a director, he has indeed managed to bring out wonderful performances by its lead cast, for which he deserves kudos.

Music by Bhansali himself, is gentle. Cinematography is fine, while the Art-Direction is weird. Performance-Wise: Hrithik Roshan & Aishwarya Rai deliver like never before. Hrithik is simply flawless as a quadriplegic, while Aishwarya is effortless as his nurse. They both deliver one of their finest and most detailed performances in here. In the supporting cast, Shernaz Patel leaves the strongest impression.

On the whole, 'Guzaarish' had the potential to become an outstanding film, but what is eventually served is strictly above-average. One Expected & Deserved Much more!
