A better world

Warning: Spoilers
A mother and her two daughters are seen traveling from Buenos Aires to the Atlantic coast, where a lot of seaside resorts welcome visitors during the season. Since it is not close to summer, one wonders why the decision to spend some time there in Mar De Ajo, a small town, to begin with. It becomes apparent that Isabel, the matriarch, has come back looking for Cholo, the man she loved in her youth, the father of the eldest girl, Sonia, now a young woman.

After settling in the small hotel, Isabel wanders through the town. Cholo, the local baker, is a man that proves hard to catch. He and his best friend, Mario, have better things to do with their time. Mario takes flying lessons from Lalo, a single father that is Cholo's neighbor. Sonia, on the other hand, makes friends with Miguel, the local teacher.

As the story progresses we find out Isabel has been treated for cancer. It appears she wants to reconnect with Cholo, the man that took her heart, as a probably and overdue gesture in her life to make peace with him and give their girls a solid home, at last. Isabel and Cholo's past go back to the days of the repression in the country, but evidently, he appears to have no recollection of their past.

Alejandro Agresti, the director of this moody and quiet film, also wrote the screenplay. It is a strange story, but then again, Mr. Agresti always has been attracted to projects involving situations that are non conventional, as proved with his "Valentin", "The Lake House" and other films. It is a shame the director has not done anything else since the completion of this project. He deserves to work more often.

The ensemble cast does a fine job. We liked the quiet intensity shown by Monica Galan. The supporting players have worked with Mr. Agresti before, notably the sweet Rodrigo Noya, who was so amazing in "Valentin", Julieta Cardinali, Carlos Roffe, and Mex Urtizberea, and even Ulises Dumont, whose role serves as a diversion in the movie.
