The smell of death
19 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is one of the best yet; containing a surreal mystery, good character development and Olive in a rather revealing mermaid costume. This week's case involves the death of a young woman who was killed when a scratch 'n' sniff book exploded! It seems the intended target was the creator of the book, Napoleon LeNez. There are two obvious suspects; the author of a pop-up book whose title got dropped in favour of LeNez's and LeNez's one time friend now mortal enemy, the sewer dweller Oscar Vibenius. The clues point to the latter especially after he is seen working on a bomb just before a second attempt on LeNez's life. Away from the case Chuck has had a great idea; The Pie Hole should start selling cup pies for those who don't want a whole slice but Ned isn't so sure; he believes in tradition and Olive is trying to help Chuck's aunts get over their loss.

This episode was a lot of fun; the story was delightfully mad and guest stars Christopher Sieber and Paul Reubens were entertaining as LeNez and Vibenius; I wouldn't be surprised if the latter appeared again; the ending certainly suggested it was likely. The subplot with Olive and the aunts was pretty good too; it was fairly downbeat but had a cheerful ending; Ellen Greene, Aunt Vivian's rendition of 'Morning Has Broken' was rather sweet.
