Review of Last Call

Last Call (I) (2012)
9/10
Solid raunchy buddy comedy
30 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
My dad, who was a huge film junkie all his life, used to call movies like this "six packers", as in movies that were great for drinking a six pack of beer to. Last Call is not going to win any awards but it's consistently funny and wins extra points for bravery. The jokes get pretty raunchy, which is to be expected in this genre, and there's plenty of nudity, which I more than welcome shamelessly, but what sets this movie apart is its dangerous humor that really doesn't ascribe to the focus-grouped-to-death sensibilities of most recent films in this genre. Not many comedies these days would have the courage (SPOILER) to have their lead characters open a bar to teenagers and encourage them to get wasted while only really being concerned about getting caught. It's pretty messed up but it's also what makes this movie better than the numerous American Pie wannabees cluttering video store shelves/Netflix feeds. Christopher Lloyd gives a strange yet enjoyably Bukowskiesque performance as a drunken Irish pub owner. The acting throughout is actually pretty good. And the girls are hot, very hot.
