Bachelorette (2012)

Not A Good Comedy, Not A Bad Character Study Though
11 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I just watched Bachelorette. It's suppose to be a comedy but I didn't laugh once. It's sort of a female version of The Hangover, with the drug references going over the top, in a sort of implausible and nasty way; for example, one character snorts coke all night, smokes a bunch of pot, then overdoses on an entire bottle of Xanax but then recovers in a matter of minutes and is cheering for more booze at the wedding. What is that suppose to teach the children or even adults with drug habits? This film is actually quite disturbing. The characters are so selfish that it actually gets horrific, and it's too bad that this film wasn't played as a drama centered upon that horror, sort of like how the party got out of control in Project X. Instead, it insists it's a comedy, and force feeds us slapstick that falls flat because the characters are so awful that the preposterous situations they find themselves in are ultimately pathetic rather than funny.

And the main character, the overweight, nerdy bachelorette, is so miscast; she not that likable, she's not a good actress, and I found it completely implausible that her character was part of the clique with the other three women, all of whom are skinny, spoiled, bulimic, pretty prisses who don't care about anyone or anything except for their pursuit of a good time.

I can't say this is a bad film, just a bad comedy, because I actually was pretty engaged and wondering how far down these women would melt, but there's no big final punch and to tell you the truth, I just finished watching it a few minutes ago and can't for the life of me remember how it ended. What a masterpiece this would have been if the woman who overdosed would have actually died, like real life, and the selfish monsters would have continued their party nevertheless.
