Hawaii Five-O: A Short Walk on the Longshore (1978)
Season 10, Episode 14
2/10
Wow....this one really, really sucked!

In the history of "Hawaii Five-O", there are many, many, many wonderful episodes--episodes that were simply great. Unfortunately, however, with twelve seasons of shows, occasionally the show dropped the ball and created a real dud. More and more of them occurred during the last three seasons--and this one is perhaps the worst.

The show begins with a crusading candidate for a union office being murdered. McGarrett and the gang are called in to investigate--but there are very few leads. So far, so good. Now here's where it gets totally stupid. In the midst of this important investigation, Steve announces he's got to go to the mainland for some 'family business'. However, what he's REALLY going to do is go undercover to investigate---posing as a longshoreman. Now there are TONS of problems with this. First, why wouldn't he tell Danny and the other guys at Five-O?!?! Why be the one-man army!? Second, and this is the most insane part, after 9 1/2 seasons playing the #1 most feared and hated lawman in Hawaii, we are expected to believe that when Steve slaps on a fake mustache and wears khakis NO ONE would recognize him--particularly when he hangs out in the worst parts of town?!!??!?! Had this occurred in season one, perhaps it would work--but here it's utterly ridiculous. Well, the ending didn't redeem it, as it relied on a very difficult to believe ending AND the baddies agreeing to just give themselves up to Steve!! Insanely written, I am shocked that Jack Lord would even agree to play such a stupid role. No other way of looking at this one--it's just dumb.
