Danno after he sets off a bomb meant for the Defense Secretary while giving a speech on accident. As McGarrett tells him he must remain calm. As Danno talks about his Newark NJ days as a cop there. As the bomb squad arrives to do their jobs.
He and his female partner check around an isolated building. While both are cornered in 2001 by Terenece Howard and one of his vicious gang members told in flashbacks.
Danno manages to kill Howard and the other gang members but can't save his partner after she is fatally shot by Howard. As he tries to get help, he sees the other police officers and firefighters cars going to a burning building. Which ironically happened on 9.11.01! The bomb squad and McGarret finally defuse of the bomb. As despite being a pain in the rear to one another, McGarrett and Danno have a strong bond and relationship that is continuing to grow.
Also Danno named his daughter Grace in honor and memory of his female partner also named Grace.
