D-Day is the new offering of the 'Kal Ho Na Ho' famed director Nikhil Advani. I went into the theater expecting a thriller, and yes that is what I got. D-Day is the story of four unassuming protagonists, all with varying back stories and a common mission that brings them together in Karachi to execute one such mission - an enforced extradition of a Dawood-like gangster. It explores their journey, their choices, their loss, their victory. Here is what I think about the movie.
Story Wali Khan (Irrfan Khan) was sent to Karachi, 9 years ago to keep an eye and report the activities of the India's 'Most Wanted Man' Iqbal Seth (Rishi Kapoor), also known by the names of Bhai and Goldman. However, Iqbal's movements are constantly monitored and heavily restricted by the ISI. But when Wali finds out that Iqbal Seth will be attending the wedding of his son, against the ISI's wishes, he believes that the perfect time to execute his plan has arrived. Three others agents namely Rudra Pratap Singh (Arjun Rampal) Indian Armed Forces, MARCOS unit, Zoya Rehman (Huma Qureshi) RAW Explosives expert and Aslam (Akash Dhaiya) a petty thief from the streets of Mumbai, are sent to infiltrate Pakistan and help carry out Mission Goldman. They have their own stories -Rudra develops a strong bond with Suraiya (Shruti Haasan), a sex worker in Karachi, while Zoya sacrifices her marriage for the mission. Everything is going right according to plan till the D-Day when something goes horribly wrong.Whether they succeed in their mission or not is the what D Day is all about.
Verdict D-Day is fast paced action packed with emotional sub tones to it. Yes, the movie does have some flaws. It gets a little boring and dark and bloody at times. Irfan Khan's scenes with his family in the second half are avoidable. The love story between Arjun Rampal and Shruti Hassan is rather half-baked and pushes the film into an avoidable sub-plot. But if you like thriller movies, you would definitely like this one and even if you don't, then go and watch this movie for the excellent performances by the entire cast.
