Why Did Jess and Nick Suddenly Drop 30 IQ Points Each?
22 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILER ALERT. ********I am flabbergasted at these writers. From the moment they woke up, it was like the characters of Nick and Jess completely emptied out their brains. I understand that they were supposed to be hung over, but this is ridiculous. That whole water thing was kind of cute, but suddenly Jess is made aware of the party she's supposed to be attending by a frantic phone call from her friend, when normally she is always there for something as significant as a godson's birthday. Then she asked Nick about the toy. It looked like a pretty big toy. Shouldn't she have seen him putting it together at some point? If it was ready to go, it would be pretty conspicuous no matter where it was in the apartment. Besides, she told Nick to assemble the children's toy two weeks in advance and just forgot about it all that time? That request doesn't make sense. Why is she mad at him when she didn't even remember there was a party at all, nor did they remind each other the night before or even set an alarm? And now, are we really supposed to believe a teacher and a college-graduate who passed the bar exam and is a bartender don't know how to assemble a child's toy? They had Nick and Jess using duct tape as if they were totally inept at following basic instructions. Who sets up a toy that has to be transported, anyway? Assemble it at the kid's location. Then Nick wants to use a lighter to melt the pieces together? After which he dropped it flaming on fabric that went all the way up the wall and didn't even try to pick it back up. Then they both scream and run out of the room, slamming the door behind them while the room becomes engulfed in flames. Nick could have put the flame out just by stepping on it with his shoe! Or something! The whole building had to be evacuated! These writers needed them to illustrate to the audience that everything they try to do together ends in horrible disaster, in order to instigate their breakup (for some reason), I get it. But the way that went down would only be amusing to little kids at best. I've never seen such a ridiculous script in my life. Hey, Zooey! Jake! You're smart people! But I guess the characters you play, in this episode at least, are complete morons. I'm very sorry. Though, if Jess is that stupid, and that bad in an emergency, she probably shouldn't be entrusted with the education and well-being of school children at all. Good God.

I noticed some of this garishness in the previous episode, too, I might add. Those kids running around Coach at the volleyball game was really unrealistic. That kind of child acting might be alright for some old Saved By The Bell extras back in the day, but not anymore. The reason I noticed is because Damon Wayans, Jr., just got done doing another show, Happy Endings. In that show, the same thing happened as his character ended up getting a job at a children's amusement center (Like Chuckee Cheese or Whatever), and he loved it. The way the scene was set up between Wayans and the kids was far better on Happy Endings than it was on New Girl. The set looked so cheesy. I'm really sorry to leave this review.
