A drab little comedy
11 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
A drab time-waster about three fed up housewives who decide to stick it to the man (or at least the dying economy in Eugene Oregon circa 1979). Jane Curtin, Jessica Lange & Susan Saint James star and while they're very appealing, the script by Bob Kaufman is nothing special and has them doing very little that is actually funny. It's a sitcom placing the ladies in the type of predicament the likes of Lucy & Ethel (or even Laverne & Shirley) would fine themselves in...and with a lot more laughs. There's an unusually large supporting cast including Dabney Coleman, Eddie Albert, Art Metrano, Fred Willard and Cathryn Damon. All very funny personalities who are, like the three leads, left with very little to do. Directed with little imagination by Robert Scheerer, who went on to direct about 30 episodes of THE LOVE BOAT. Curtin & Saint James would find lasting success a few years later with KATE & ALLIE, while Lange would give her career-making performance a year later in Bob Rafelson's THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE.
