Alfred Adam?
14 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Although actually photographed at the 1929 Indianapolis event, it's odd to find this one released on DVD when so many other really great films from this period are still hidden in the vaults. Mind you, if, like me, you're not expecting anything much from Mr. Haines, it's not as unwatchable as some of his other efforts. Haines nearly always plays a jerk, but in this one, the screenwriters go to great efforts to make him an unlovable jerk. That's certainly a switch in his favor – especially as the support cast is headed by people we respect such as Ernest Torrence, Anita Page and Eugenie Besserer. Director Harry Beaumont, fresh from his efforts on "The Broadway Melody", handles his chores competently enough; and Alfred Adam, of all people, is alleged to be making his movie debut here as the doctor, but I wonder if it is OUR Alfred Adam or some other Alfred Adam?
