Malibu Shark Attack (2009 TV Movie)
3/10
Goblin Sharks
27 June 2014
This movie begins with an underwater earthquake off the coast of California which disturbs the sea life and results in goblin sharks suddenly appearing and feeding on people who happen to be spending time in the water near Malibu. This problem is further compounded when a tsunami hits the coastline and traps people in the water where the goblin sharks are lurking. Now, as far as the movie was concerned, I had a couple of issues with it. First, both the acting and the computer graphics left much to be desired. Second, the film provides a couple of incorrect portrayals of goblin sharks. For instance, the film suggests goblin sharks are almost extinct. While they might indeed be considered "rare" that image may be clouded by the fact that they are generally found in depths where humans seldom venture. As a result they are seldom seen. But that doesn't mean they are almost extinct. Likewise, the movie goes to great lengths to depict them as vicious man-eaters. Not necessarily. To further elaborate, an underwater earthquake near Taiwan in 2006 brought about a hundred of these creatures up near the surface. However, no great tragedy to mankind occurred that I know of. Now, that is not to say that they won't attack a human who might be splashing around in the water and bleeding profusely. I mean, they're still sharks after all so I suppose it's possible. Along with that, I must admit that they really look quite frightening and so I certainly can't fault a movie director for making them out to be like tiger sharks on steroids. It's the nature of the business. Be that as it may, one last comment about them is that, unlike their depiction in this film, they are actually quite slow and prefer to surprise their prey rather than outrace them. But again, why let the facts interfere with a good opportunity? In any case, as I mentioned earlier the cast and the second-rate animation both left much to be desired. That said, although both Peta Wilson (as "Heather") and Chelan Simmons ("Jenny") were definitely quite attractive, neither of them were able to push this movie into satisfactory territory. Accordingly, I rate the movie as below average.
