What Happens Next (I) (2011)

A very enjoyable movie

Warning: Spoilers
I found this movie to be different than your average gay themed movie. So, I was expecting your run of the mill gay comedy, but Wendie Malick is who drew me to watch it. I was pleasantly surprised. Wendie was over the top as a domineering sister and mother, constantly on the verge of a nervous break-down, as only she could pull it off. Jon Lindstrom plays the up-tight, asexual, older man needing to find a life after an early retirement, when he casually befriends a younger gay man, Chris Murrah, in a park. I would have liked to have seen a little more character development with the rest of the cast, such as Andy and Roz's relationship. Brian's character could have been "fleshed" out more and I would have loved to have seen the maid witness the kiss at the end. Too much was just brushed under the rug by simple clichés. A few minor. characters were completely unnecessary to the story development, such as the annoyingly silly dog trainer and Roz's assistant. Andy's reaction to Paul's slow steps out of the closet were not very understanding. Paul was just coming out, for Pete's sake! Give him a little time for public displays of affection! I've been with my partner for 25 years and we've never felt the need or urge to kiss in public. And wearing ball caps mean you're gay? Puleeze! Aside from these minor details, it's a great love story and comedy of errors. I'd like to see what was left on the cutting room floor.
