The Canal (2014)
7/10
Carried by a very fine performance from Evans

'The Canal' is a very well made film which delves into the psychology of losing one's mind. It's a mystery-thriller but the answer to the mystery should be pretty obvious to the majority of viewers. That doesn't hurt the film though. The movie is clever in that the story gives an excuse for a lot of the film's scares to be dreams or imaginations that are there one minute and gone the next. Usually too many of these is very annoying but this film demands you excuse them as they are simply following the narrative.

Rupert Evans is in excellent form in the lead role. He plays the character perfectly and finds the perfect balance between being sympathetic and being a potential menace. The ending was actually really well worked and came as quite a shock. It seems this film has flown under the radar a bit which is a shame because it's actually better than a lot of similar films being released these days.
